Summary

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Wilder Girls comes a feverishly twisty thriller about a girl whose past has always been a mystery--until she decides to return to her mother's hometown 。 。 。 where history has a tendency to repeat itself。

Ever since Margot was born, it's been just her and her mother, struggling to get along。 But that's not enough for Margot。 She wants family。 She wants a past。 And she may have just found the answer: A photograph, pointing her to a town called Phalene。 Only, when Margot gets there, it's not what she bargained for。

As soon as they see her face, everyone in town knows who Margot belongs to。 It's unmistakable--she's a Nielsen。 And when a mysterious girl who could be Margot's twin is pulled from a fire, Margot realizes that her mother left Phalene for a reason。 But was it to hide her past? Or was it to protect Margot from what's still there?

The only thing Margot knows for sure is there's poison in their family tree, and their roots are dug so deeply into Phalene that now that she's there, she might never escape。

An exciting, suspenseful, entertaining book about a town you could never dream of living in。。。or want to! When teenager Margot fights with her mom, and goes to stay with her Gram, she is involved in a town of things you’ll never believe。 I loved Wilder Girls, and this book did not disappoint me。 Looking forward to reading more Rory Power books。

At first I was frustrated with this book because of the mother daughter dynamic but decided to push on。 It was worth it。 I really enjoyed it and it kept me guessing。 I certainly wasn't ready for the twist, not that one for sure! *2。5When I first read the reviews I wasn't really expecting much so I had pretty low expectations。 However, I felt that it wasn't that bad。 It was ok, enjoyable and a quick read, a bit confusing。 There wasn't really much character development and the characters themselves were kind of annoying especially Margot。 I'm already quite prejudiced against books with no romance and that is why I'm giving it the rating I gave it。 Other than that, wouldn't recommend it but is still enjoyable。 *2。5When I first read the reviews I wasn't really expecting much so I had pretty low expectations。 However, I felt that it wasn't that bad。 It was ok, enjoyable and a quick read, a bit confusing。 There wasn't really much character development and the characters themselves were kind of annoying especially Margot。 I'm already quite prejudiced against books with no romance and that is why I'm giving it the rating I gave it。 Other than that, wouldn't recommend it but is still enjoyable。 。。。more

Despite an interesting premise and an impressive and gripping start, this book lost me a bit。 It was bizarre and creepy and strange, which was exactly what I was looking for, but lacking some of the character dynamics and tense moments I felt it needed to really grab and hold my attention。 Worth the read? Yes; but I can't say I loved this book。 Despite an interesting premise and an impressive and gripping start, this book lost me a bit。 It was bizarre and creepy and strange, which was exactly what I was looking for, but lacking some of the character dynamics and tense moments I felt it needed to really grab and hold my attention。 Worth the read? Damn。 I wouldn't usually go this low on a rating, but this really didn't do it for me。I'm not sure if it's just not what I expected, or if it was too predictable, or if it was the lack of things actually happening, but something put me off this and but I'm left feeling pretty empty after reading it。But don't let that completely deter you。 This is the author of Wilder Girls, which I know a lot of people loved (and I never read), but I'm hearing the post-read vibe is similar, so if you loved that Damn。 I wouldn't usually go this low on a rating, but this really didn't do it for me。I'm not sure if it's just not what I expected, or if it was too predictable, or if it was the lack of things actually happening, but something put me off this and but I'm left feeling pretty empty after reading it。But don't let that completely deter you。 This is the author of Wilder Girls, which I know a lot of people loved (and I never read), but I'm hearing the post-read vibe is similar, so if you loved that you may love this one。 I wasn't really expecting a horror-ish read either, so that could be part of it。And there was lesbian MC rep, which I'm always thankful for an appreciative of。 It just very much wasn't for me overall。 。。。more

Well, this was a rollercoaster。 Not exactly in the best way。I usually don't read horror, it's not my favourite genre, but I try to pick something up from time to time。 Why I don't usually read it: it's creepy and makes me jump and yes, I don't hate it, but I like to read it when I'm in a calm environment。 This book is one of the few I have read, and I wouldn't say I didn't like it。This book kept me on my toes for most of it; yes, it was a bit boring in the beginning, but soon it got pretty inter Well, this was a rollercoaster。 Not exactly in the best way。I usually don't read horror, it's not my favourite genre, but I try to pick something up from time to time。 Why I don't usually read it: it's creepy and makes me jump and yes, I don't hate it, but I like to read it when I'm in a calm environment。 This book is one of the few I have read, and I wouldn't say I didn't like it。This book kept me on my toes for most of it; yes, it was a bit boring in the beginning, but soon it got pretty interesting。 'Thrilling' is probably the best way to describe it。 I guessed some of the plot twists, but most remained out of my reach。The one thing I didn't love, and which is probably the reason I didn't feel like giving this 5 stars, is the science of the explanation。 I can't say anything without spoilers, so spoilers:(view spoiler)[ How does that even work!?!? I might not be a scientist specialising in reproduction in human beings, but even I know enough that you literally can't have something like this happen, namely babies, without sperm to fertilise the eggs。 You just can't。 The ridicin was supposed to increase fertility; not fertilise。 There is a difference between the two, and it is pretty big。 Fertility is just a measure of how likely you are to achieve fertilisation, and fertilisation is the actual union of gametes, two different ones to produce a zygote。In theory I think you could produce a zygote with two copies of the same gamete, i。e。, here two egg cells, but since, again, I'm not a scientist specialising in human reproduction, I don't know how true it is。 What I do know is there is a very, very small, minuscle chance of this happening, if it were possible。 And that chance will have the risks of various genetic defects and very low life expectancy, like we see in clones。All that combined, something like this is just implausible。 I know the author must have taken creative liberties, and she did put together an interesting story, so all of that can be overlooked, but I just like my stories to have plausible ends。 Or just be fantasy, so I don't have to think about it that much。 (hide spoiler)]I also hated that(view spoiler)[ Tess died。 Could she not have survived somehow!?!? (hide spoiler)] I am glad that this book didn't leave any plotlines that were introduced, unexplored。 I think everything was tied up nicely。On the whole a very entertaining thriller, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes creepy towns, secrets, thrillers, strained relationships between mothers and daughters, and slightly implausible plotlines in an otherwise non-fantasy story。 。。。more

I found the mystery to be a big highlight of this novel。 Power kept pulling me in through the whole text and managed to reveal details which brought more questions。 The writing was lovely and character interactions were intriguing。 I do wish the book had been a bit shorter as some parts of the story felt overdone, but overall an exciting read!

I absolutely loved this book。 I bought the book because I had read "Wilder Girls" previously and just fell in love with the writing and thought I'd give this book a shot and it did definitely not disappoint。 The description of the book is just a small seed implanted to portray the whole book。 It follows the story of Margot, who has a shallow relationship with her mother and lives just with her in an apartment in a small town。 Margot knows nothing about her relatives nor her mother's past and her I absolutely loved this book。 I bought the book because I had read "Wilder Girls" previously and just fell in love with the writing and thought I'd give this book a shot and it did definitely not disappoint。 The description of the book is just a small seed implanted to portray the whole book。 It follows the story of Margot, who has a shallow relationship with her mother and lives just with her in an apartment in a small town。 Margot knows nothing about her relatives nor her mother's past and her mother will not satisfy her with any answers either。 But that’s not enough for Margot。 She wants family。 She wants a past。 And she just found the key she needs to get it: A photograph, pointing her to a town called Phalene。 Pointing her home。 Only, when Margot gets there, it’s not what she bargained for。The whole book is just filled with plot twists if you ask me; some more predictable than others, but overall VERY intriguing to read。 It's a sort of thriller mystery with unrealism added to the mix。 The gory descriptions are also very interesting in a creepy way and keeps up the suspense。 Rory Power definitely has a way of writing considering both "Wilder Girls" and this book which I absolutely love and find refreshing as I've never really read books like these。 (view spoiler)[Some of my favourite scenes in the book:1。 When Margot finds the body in the fire on her first day in Phalene。 The description is just so good and this is also where the confusion and mystery properly begins as she is literally identical to Margot。2。 When the police officer busts Margot in the basement of the station, finding her go through past investigation files to find more information and he end up showing her the dead body of the dead girl that Margot found in the fire。3。 Around the end where Margot digs herself out of the grave and goes to the Millers' house just to find the whole family dead。 It's just so tragic but the way it's written is truly exceptional。 While reading this part, I still had hopes of Tess making it out alive but, unfortunately, that was not the case。 :(Side note #1:I also absolutely loved the dynamic between Margot and Tess。 Such a shame we didn't get to see their relationship develop because I was really hoping for it。 They had just known each other for a few days, and maybe it was purely the circumstances that brought them together, but already they felt comfortable around each other and understood each other completely。 But yeah, again, such a shame we didn't get to see more of that because of the death of Tess。 :(Side note #2: Did definitely not see the ending of Eli and Margot coming。 It was a bit strange for me to see them hanging out but I guess death brings people together; they were both mourning for the same person so it kind of makes sense but, nevertheless, still a surprise to me。 (hide spoiler)]All in all, this book is definitely something else。 And the good kind of something else。 I recommend it to everyone who's into YA fiction really。 The book also represents a queer main character so that's also a plus point。 A solid 5 out of 5 for me。 。。。more

What the actual fuck did I just read? Is my brain okay? I rated this book 5/5 stars because it’s brilliant。 I just want prepared for the twisted and dark horror/sci-fi ending! It’s easily one of the best books I’ve read this year so far。
